CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES GISBORNE AND EAST COAST PLAY OX THE FIRST DAY The Gisbbrnc, and East Coast Lawn Tenuis Association's annual chumpionship tournament opened on tbe Whataupoko courts yesterday in ideal playing conditions and with good entries. The entrants came from further afield than is usually the case, there being a number of ladies and men from Wellington, while Masterton and Wairoa were also represented, with a Queensland visitor holidaying in Gisborne also included. The standard of play Was higher than usual, the presence of the outside talent helping materially in this respect, most of the outsiders being successful in, their early efforts. Somo of the play yesterday was of a strcnubus nature, one of the men's contests in particular providing something of a marathon. This Was the meeting between G. W. Langhorne and A. G. Lancaster in the championship class, the first game between them going to 14—12 and the second to B—6, both in Langhorne 's favor. Play yesterday was confined to singles' both in the championship and handicap sections, and good progress was made, some of the sections Hearing the semi-final stages.
