MAORI DROWNED
WASHED FROM FORD (Special to the Herald.) RUATORIA, this day. A Maori, Pia Pchia, 22, was washed away while fording Ken's crossing, a inile from Ruatoria, on Monday, and his body was recovered at Port Awanui on Christmas Day, 10 miles from the spot where he disappeared. The deceased was employed by Mr. Brown, whose place he was leaving at the time he met his death. He was riding on horseback, and the Waiapu river was high as a result of the recent rains, the deceased being washed'from his mount when he got well into the current. Dressed in a big overcoat and canvas leggings, the deceased had little opportunity of saving himself. The crossing is described as a safo one on normal occasions, but it ap\ peared to be extremely dangerous, at the time of the fatality. The deceased was ad vised not to cross at tho spot,, for there were other places which could have been forded with safety". This ford was chosen by deceased, however, as it was the shortest route. An inquest was held yesterday at Port Awanui, when a verdict of accidental drowning was returned.
