WAIROA NEWS

(Herald Correspondent.)

Tile public works, men at Waikokopu, on the route of the Wairoa-Gisborne railway, havo all stopped work for the Christmas and New Year holidays. Though much solid work has been done at Waikokopu, most of it is of a preparatory nature. The borings have been taken for the viaduct over the inner harbor, • which will be negotiated partly by a filling and partly by a bridge. Largo stocks of materials arc on hand, but looking from tho wharf not much progress has been made on tho side cutting round the bluff. A huge amount of rock material will have, to be shifted in going round this spot, but when tho trains start to run n lino view of the Waikokopu bight wilt be obtainable. A children's fancy dress party held at the Y.M.C.A. building, Kotemaori, to mark the close of the school year, drew a large attendance, 75 children appearing in fancy dress. Games and folk dances were indulged in, and kept up till 10 p.m., at which hour the young people were regaled with supper. The adults then took the floor, and danced till 1.30 a.m. Mr. Hunter was M.C., and the music was supplied by Mesdames Bee and Seheeles, and .Messrs. Climo and Whitton. On Tuesday a farewell social was tendered to Miss Chambers at the 1 Kotemaori schoolrooom. Mr. H. Bee presided, and he presented Miss Chambers with a handsome travelling rug a 3 a mark of esteem on the part of the parents, and some small appreciation of her work for the children. Miss Chambers left later for the south. A Christmas tree was the scene of attraction at the Kotemaori schoolroom. The present-laden tree was quickly despoiled by the teachers,, Mr. Johnson and Miss Chambers, each of the little ones securing a prize. Work on the East Coast railway south of Wairoa closed down for the holidays till January 9, a very few men being left in camp. The tunnellcrs are still on strike. Up to the holiday season, the Wairoa. freezing works' iigures were 4000 carcases better than at this time last year. Doubtless the drop in the, price of wool, if maintained, should help the works to recover some of their lost position.

The third birthday of the Girl Guides and Brownies was celebrated by • a social evening, the proceedings being presided over by the commissioner, Miss Foote, and Captain Irma Wilson. The evening was spent in Guide drill and calisthenics. Several enrolments were carried out, and the cups presented to the several divisions —one of these being a cup presented by Mrs. R. Boyd, the first treasurer. A presentation was made also to the captain. The birthday caktA, which was adorned with three candles, was presented by Guide Isabel Osier. Fancy dancing was executed by a visitor, Miss Mona Lees, and supper concluded a very pleasant evening. The Rev. W. R. Milne, who has ' accepted a call to Wellington, will de- ' liver his farewell messages to the congregation of St. Andrew's, Wairoa, on Sunday morning and evening. The Rev. 1). J. Shaw has been appointed moderator to overlook the proceedings for filling the vacancy and arranging supply in the meantime. The Rev. R. McOully, of Maraeakakaho, will fill the pulpit for the first two Sundays in January. Miss Ena Murray, of Dunedin, is on a visit to Mr." and Mrs. J. F. Haughton. There were intermittent showers last Sunday, but at night heavy rain set in from the north, and a very wjld night resulted. Much damage has been idone to stone fruit, and the brownrot now showing threatens a considerable shortage. In addition, owing to I tho excess of rain., the fruit has little , flavor.

Scott won the Glengarry Four's row ing race by two lengths.
