MORE TELEGRAMS
THE CHRISTMAS RUSH NEED FOR MODERN MACHINE A rush of telegraphic business such as wns experienced this Christmas emphasises the necessity for more modern equipment in the Gisborne office. Some of the centres of about the same size as Gisborne have the Murray machine installed, and this deals with telegrams with far greater despatch than the method in use at present in Gisborne. With all of the more important offices equipped, with this machine the work throughout most of the remaining parts of the country would be speeded up, for one slow office may hold up many of the faster and better equipped ones. The telegraphic business at Gisborne. this week prior to Christmas Day was the heaviest on record. Monday was the busiest day yet experienced in the telegraphic office here for the second day before Christmas, and this tended to relieve the Christmas Eve rush to a certain extent. Despite this, however, large numbers of telegrams were handled on Tuesday, those outward showing only a slight reduction on those handed in' oil Christmas # Eve last year, while those received were heavier. So great were the numbers of inward messages that many of the ordinary greeting telegrams were received at Napier from other parts of the Dominion, andf from Napier they were posted to Gisborne to he delivered on Christmas Day. This relieved the congestion at the Gisborne. office to a great extent, but the, operators hero were unable to leave duty until 4.30 o'clock on Christmas morning. The deliveries of- telegrams ceased on Christmas Eve at about 11 p.m., but they were resumed next morning, and the messengers were not able to make their last deliveries until about 4 p.m.
