MEETING OF COUNCIL

The ’.fortnightly meeting of the Gisborno Borough Council was held last eveuing, the Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, -presiding. There were, also present: Ors. ,!. Blair, H. E. Maude, ,T. W. 11. Holmes, G. Bradley Smith, S. V. Beaufoy, W. J. Mac Gibbon, and 11. H. DoCosta. The sewretary of the Y.W.O.A. wrote pointing out that there was no group other than the association taking any responsibility for the tennis courts at the Butene road reserve. It was 'clearly out of the question for a small group of girls to undertake the upkeep of three courts in order to secure the use of one. The association, however, was keeping two of the courts in order, and they concluded that the association could claim exclusive use of the middle court.—The request was approved. it was decided to forward a letter of thanks to the Wairoa Power Board for the hospitality extended to the Mayor and councillors during their stay in Wairoa. in connection with the visit of the Governor-General and Lady Eergusson. Votes of thanks to the, many local bodies, orgnisations, and individuals who assisted in making the visit of Their Excellencies to Gisborne a success wore also carried unanimously. REPORTS ENGINKHit'S DEPARTMENT. The engineer, Mr. A. Young, reported, inter alia ; “New water main across To Arai bridge at Manutuke: The contractor for the new bridge at Manutuke has completed the piers and deck, including provision for carrying the new 18in. water-main. The pipes have been placed in position, with the exception of one span which is not. yet sufficiently set. The water department’s staff are joining up. “Stormwater Drainage Loan: All stormwater work in upper Gladstone road lias been completed. The open drain through private property from Dominion road to Roebuck road has been piped and filled in for a distance of 112 ft. A stormwater sump and outlet has been put in on Kaiti Esplanade road. The concrete kerb and channel at the weighbridge site, Kaiti Esplanade, has been completed. This work was undertaken conjointly with the Harbor Board.

“Unemployment Relief Works: Harris street.—The metalling of this street for a bitumen grouted course is in progress. The stormwater sumps at the junction with Wainui road have been completed. This work is carried on as is convenient to the more important reconstruction work of Gladstone road. It is hoped to complete Harris street before the end of the year. Removal of tram-track and reforming Gladstone road.—The section of tram-track from Herbert road to Roebuck road has been completed. With the council’s approval, the additional section from Roebuck road tot Disraeli street has been opened up. The work is proceeding satisfactorily. Cycle track, Childers road reserve.—The work of reforming the cycle track is progressing satisfactorily.' Two of the curves have been completed and the third is well in hand.” works; committee. “Obstruction, northern end of Grey street: It was resolved to serve a notice on Mr. Wootton to remove the remainder of the old Barter works from Grey street, as they were an obstruction.

“Tramway sleepers: In regard to the disposal of tramway sleepers, it was decided to allow tho Public Works Department to obtain their quota as far as possible from Hie line now being lifted, and any sleepers tho council required could be taken from the unlifted portion of track. The reports were adopted.
