(Herald Correspondent.) The weather is becoming h fruitful source of discussion, seeing that it still continues to be unpleasant. The holiday yesterday was completely spoiled, though the tain was not, particularly heavy. if was certainly not picnic weather, and the excursion to Waikokopu was poorly patronised, many intending lo lie there not being willing to. lace the discomforts. ll is now ascertained that the sheep losses at Te Maire', due to the cold rainstorm, totalled between 3CO and 400. The mortal remains of the late .Mr George Stevens, of Mangapoike and Wairoa, were laid lo rest in the Wairoa cemetery on Sulurday afternoon, in the presence of a number of friends. The majority were members of a very large family, ami besides there were also present a number of ex-servicemen. Canon Buftorficld conducted the service at St. Paul's (Anglican] Church, and at the grave-side. The casket, which 'was covered with many beautiful wioaths, was borne by six members of the deceased's family. He expected in two years or so to see much larger crowds, when the railway would bring to the opening rowing men from south and north. He did not think he could say much more except that he hoped to again officiate at similar openings. The club captain, Mr. J. S. Gilligan, said that another 12 months had come round since they last met at an open, ing function, and aeain they were unfortunate in the weather. The last season had been a remarkably good one and there was every probability that 1929-30 would be equally good. There were a number of new members, and ho counselled them to put in their best work, and pay attention to the coaching, and above all, not to sit on the "banks and look on, but to get into the boats and row. t He concluded by thanking all who had helped the club in any way that afternoon, especially the ladies. 'The ladies of the club members then supplied a tasty afternoon tea. The results of the opening fours were as follow: First heat—Crarer, Davis, Hutchinson, and Thomson, deadheated with D. Jones, Efobitt, Molesworth, and G. Mayo. A very good race indeed. Martin,' Bur, Paterson and Robson 3. Second heat—W. Jane. Dalzell, K. Hall and Johnson 1; Gilligan, Stewart, Crarer and Alves 2; Lane's crew 3. Won by l\ lengths. Third heat—Gay and (isler contested the event, but one stroke broke a swivel, and it was decided to row the race over at once, the winner to row in the final. The second race resulted: Gay, Pert, Reid and G. Gay 1; Osier, Gemmell, Mann and Heise 2. Won by a length. The final resulted : L. Gay. Pert, Reid and G. Gay 1; W. Jane, Dalsell, K. Hall and Johnson 2: D. Jones, Ebbitt, Molesworth and G. Mayo 3. Won by less than half a canvas after a great race.
