£BO.OOO IN CLUB SCANDAL
PARIS, August 6. Great surprise has been aroused in Bordeaux by the news of the arrest of the director of a well-known' gaming club attached to a fashionable cafe and three of his friends. The club was much frequented by people of the heat social standing in the region, and was generally regarded as above suspicion, Imt a police inquiry, it is alleged,' revealed grave irregularities in its accounts. Oil urges against those now under arrest have not vet been definitely formulated, but it is said that a sum of about 10,000,000 francs (£80,000). is involved. The principal victims are alleged to be shareholders, who had subscribed the sum of 10,000.000 francs in a single month, on the promise that they would receive dividends of 15 per cent. The family of one of the arrested men is stated to have offered an immediate payment of 5,000,000 francs in part settlement of the shareholders’ claims.
