Mr. A. Cleave has received advice, from his daughter, Miss Jv. M- Cleave, who is teaching at the Tahakopa school, Chuha, that the school building was burned down last Tuesday night,, and that the school residence, where she was living, was dismantled in an endeavor to save it from the Haines. * A suggestion that the Government might take over wool-carrying lorries in the summer, in order to givo a bettor service by rail and road combined, avas made by Mr J. E. Benson at Farmers’ Union meeting to-day. The proposal did not meet with general approval, other delegates commenting that this would mean interference with private enterprise, while one delegate brought a smile to most of the faces at the meeting by mention of the wallknown organisation, the 1928 Committee. A delightful dance was given in the Assembly Mil last evening by the Gisborne basketball oiforts committee for the entertainment of tlie. visiting Wellington. basketball players, and the function was highly successful, the attendance numbering about 300. A most effective decorative scheme had been carried out. the hall being arranged with streamers of yellow, black and red, rop'TSi'mbig the colors of the Wellington and Poverty Bay teams, and the supper room wa.s decorated in a similarly attrucivo manner, the tidies being, adorned with vases of datliodils and frecsias. A dainty supper was served, under ' liie iupervisiou of Mrs P. Beale, and dance music was supplied by Miss Glover'S orchestra, the extras- being played by Misses (!. Wilson and O’Hallarfin. and Mr. P. Bosic. The M's.O. were Messrs. A. S. Parker and C. Rigby.
