GAOL SENSATION
PRISONER SHOT DOWN BUCKLEY ATTEMPTS ESCAPE (Pot Press Association.) AUCKLAND, last night. A> sensational happening occurred at Mount Eden prison at 4.30 o’clock this afternoon. • While working in the’prison yard John Buckley, 27, an habitual criminal, slipped away and attempted to escape by scaling "the outer wall, and was rumiin in the open ground on the other side, when he was detected. A warder shouted to him to stop. Buckley did not do so, so the wardei fired, wounding Buckley in the back. liw.'kley was taken to Auckland nos pital, and his condition to-night was stated to be sefious. ■ Buckley, who is a notorious burglar, escaped fVoin Mount Eden gaol last year, and was at large for -over seven weeks.
