VISITORS’ EASY WIN POVERTY BAY BEATEN 18-2 Good combination and a better knowledge of the game enabled the Wellington B grade basketball team to overwhelm Poverty Bay’s Thursday league representatives at the Gisborne Central School yesterday afternoon, the final score being 18—2. The visitors dominated play throughout, despite the fact that their opponents were given opportunities time and again. The home players were unable to hold the southerners at any stage, many of their mistakes being attributed to slow passing and poor openings. Nearly 500 people witnessed the match, which was refereed by Miss M. E. Armstrong, of Wellington, The teams were as under: — Wellington: Misses F. Leiper, M. Worbays, J. Rcot-t, ,J. Kirk, 8. Corbett, E. Fleet, J. Davidson, 1). Eagles, and M. Sharp. Poverty Bay: Misses Beale, Byrne, Kenny, O’Halloran, Sullivan, Park, Parker, Bee, and Morris. The game opened briskly with Wellington launching a strong attack. Poverty Bay endeavored to stem the movement, but the southerners reached their opponents’ end without mishap, and three goals were scored in quick succession. The home players then rallied, Miss Kenny netting after a good piece of work by Miss Byrne. Several efforts on the part of the Poverty Bay team were soon smothered by the visitors, who scored another six goals in less than 10 minutes. Just before half-time Miss Beale ran through to net, and the score stood: — Wellington 0 Poverty Bay 2 Wellington increased the pace in the second spell, and kept the opposition defending for the greater part. The southerners scored almost immediately upon resuming, but for a brief period after this the game was more eVenoly contested, and the Poverty Bay combination showed a slight improvement.
