WAIROA ROADS
COUNTY ENGINEER’S REPORT

At the last meeting of the Wairoa County Council the engineer reported inter alia:— i
‘‘All roads throughout the county are in very fair order i’or this season of the I year, with the exception of some parts of the clay roads that have cut up too deep to allow motor traffic to get through. Mitchell’s slip on the ltuapapa-Wai-karctaheke road, metalled over last season, has subsided again. There have been several slips of a similar nature 'throughout the county, .but eventually they settled and became solid. . “Nuhaka River road : To metal Peakman’s cutting on this road for 40 chains will cost approximately £350. As instructed T have made application to the Public Works Department for a subsidy on the money available for expenditure on this work.
“Waikatuku bridge: The pile driving has been completed. The lagoon has been let out to get the water down to a workable level and the contractor is now sheathing in and sinking for the foundation of the abutments. The other three contracts on hand are at a standstill for the time being, these being all metalling contracts “Deviation on Mangataniwa bridle track: The distance of the deviation on this track is two miles,' from the saddle to Pitkemalai stream, and requires forming to allow the settlers interested to fence the roadline through their properties. The old track in use now being closed and the new unformed line of road being the legalised road, T have made application to the Public Works Department for a subsidy on the amount of money available to spend on this .work and will give an estimate of cost to complete the two miles after the engineering survey has been carried out. “NapierGisborne, via Morcre, main highway: General surface work and power grader work has been carried out over the entire length, the power graders doing approximately 10CO miles ot single cut grading. The highway is in vorv good order. “Wbiiron-Gisborne, via Hangnron main highway: General surface work has been maintained on Hie entire length and the ,lower graders graded approximately 150 miles of single cut grading, the highway is in verv good order. “Tiuakitnri Valiev main highway: General surface work lias been carried on the entire length bv the surfacemen. The highway is in very good order. . . , ~ “YVai'iiromoann main highway: <«enoral surface work lias been maintained ,n |bo hi'bwav bv the surfacemen. Tlip nower graders graded approximate(v 1?0 miles of single cut grading. The highway is in very good order,"
