(Herald Correspondent.! Mr. R. Tapper, sen., has shown ,tho Herald ' correspond out it very fine sample of the Eureka variety of lemons, grown on his farm at Tapui, (dose to Waikaremoana. It will be remembered that at the annual meeting of the Wairoa Dairy factory Co. a number of Maori landowners at Mohaka sought lhe co-opera-tion of that body to the extent of collecting the percentages on milk c!h ques to help in financing the purchase of lirsi grade dairy stock. The company agreed to do this, and'good results have already been secured. Altogether .120 well-bred Jersey cows and bulls were purchased at Dannevirke for the Mohaka natives and (hose have now arrived on the farms. Carroll, of Huraimia. i At the monthly meeting of the Wairoa Harbor Board flierc were present Messrs. P. H. Summerfield, J. Osier, T. Dave„v, J. M. Taylor, U. Britnell, J. Corkill, E. L. Joblin, K. B. Crombie, and A. T. Carroll. Messrs. Richardson and Co. wrote stating that they considered it was a mistake to increase the pilotage charges at Wairoa as the traffic did not warrant it unless passed on. The same firm imported that slight damage had been done to the belting of the s.s. Pukcko by a projecting iron strap on a pile at Waikokopu wharf. The matter was referred to the Public Works Department.' The G.B.P.M. and M. Co. offered for sale a dumping plant, .particulars of which are to be obtained. Members reported.that 12.10 bales of wool, if not more, would be dumped at Waikokopu if a plant was installed. It was decided to lease to Air. Hutchinson a small area at Waikokopu on which he proposed to erect a cottage for a worker, the board to have the right to resume the land, and a nominal rent to bo asked. Similar arrangements arc to bo made with Messrs. Waldron and Brownie. The secretary reported the result of the recent deputation to Wellington, as embodied in a telegram from the Public Works Department agreeing to the board contributing £2OBO, or £2 for £l, to add .18011. to the breakwater, to take -JO,OOO yards of stone, the cost to bo added to the £20,00(1 already agreed to. On the motion of Mr. Diivev, the terms were agreed to, Mr. Corkill voting against them. The chairman reported that accommodation for the waterside workers at Waikokopu was estimated to cost £440. and an application is to be made for a £2 for £1 subsidy. Mr. Corkill, who voted against the motion, explained that lie did so in ease the ratepayers should refuse to consent to a big loan for the purpose. Where would the board be then? A vote of thanks was passed to the chairman and secretary for the efforts they had made in Wellington to have the board’s wishes carried out.

Niue tenders were received try the Wairoa County Council for the delivery of .3000 cubic yards of pit metal. The tender of Mr. M. G. Cameron was accepted. There were 70 applications for the position of traffic inspector to the Wairoa County Council, in comtnna'ion with the Wairoa Borough Council, which pays £IOO of the salary. The applications were reduced to four, all being from outside districts. These four attended the council meeting and met the joint committee comprising Ihe county chairman, Cr. Carroll, and the Mayor of the borough. After separate personal interviews Mr. F. A. Phelan, of Palmerston North, was appointed. The successful applicant at present holds the position of agent in the Manawatu for the Wellington Automobile Association, having had about 10 years’ experience in such work as he will have in Wairoa. He is a married man with several children. As he has to give notice to his present employers, Air. Phelan will not take over for a month.

The Wairoa county pay sheet at last meeting was the heaviest for many years, £97X)O. Much of this was due to the importation 6f road machinery. The county revenue for July totalled £4443 2s sd, made up as follows: Rates, £3037 12s Id; heavy traffic fees, £3O 8s Od; pound fees, £6 10s; motor drivers' licenses, £l4 15s; building permits, £1 ss; rent of.remrves, £7 10s; refund petrol tax,'£Bl tls 4d; offensive trades, £3 3s; auctioneers' fees, £27 12s; miscellaneous, £1 7s 3d.

Leave of absence was granted at the County Council meeting to Cr. W. T. Hill, who is suffering from influenza.

ftfr. G. 0. Ormond has been suggested to the County Council as the Wairoa representative on the proposed Hawke’s Bay Scenic Board. The funeral of the late Mr. N. G. Glass ford, of “Taheke, ” Waikareaioana, was largely attended by muntry settlors, over 40 cars being in the funeral cortege. Captain Ball, of he Church Army, held a short, service it St. Paul's Church and also olliciated at the graveside.
