TALKIE BOOM

BRITAIN'S CHANCE HERE TO STAY? LONDON, April A. "Here is a great opportunity for Brit ish film producers,'; says , Mr. Roy Pomeroy, director of the British Board of Paramount. Pictures, who for the past two years has produced sound pictures, including the company's first alltalking picture. Mr. Pomeroy considers that the British, industry is presented with a golden opportunity to- recover the ground lost during the' war in the silent films. "Britain possesses beautifully modulated voices, splendid acting ability, and well-equipped studios," he said. Mr. Pomeroy admits many producers fear that the talkies will be merely a novelty, but, he says,. even if their worst fears are realised, American producers are so heavily involved already that the talkies cannot die suddenly, and British ■ productions will have "time to obtain a foothold in America and the British Dominions. Meanwhile, America is spending rast sums and employing thousands of new brains to solve new problems. The Daily Mail, in a leading article, says: "The real battle between the silent and the talkies has not yet been fought. There may be a compromise/ but, for the moment, the talkies are sweeping on triumphantly and furnish the British industiy with an exceptional opportunity. "Neither American technical ingenuity nor their lavish finance can deprive us of the English player's language and voice. English-speaking persons, all over the world, will demand the cultivated English voice." \ * ' ■
