OBITUARY
At the advanced age of 81 years, Mr. E. J. Dudley, of Manaia, died on Sun day last. Mr. Dudley arrived in New Zealand with his parents as an infant and lived in Cbris;church. He commenced his career in the legal profession, but at the time of the Poverty Bay massacre, when Te Kooti's hand swept down on the settlers at Matawhero, he joined the Armed Constabulary. Among the victims of Te Koo.i's massacre were a sister of Mr. Dudley, her husband- (Major Briggs), and child. Mr. Dudley was stationed at Opunake, in the Armed Constabulary, and on their disbandment he took up a small holding at Opunake. It was on his propity that Miss Dobbie was murdered. He was one of the pioneers of the district, being among those who were en gaged an sarf-bottt operations before any wharf or harbor was built.
