Bir .Joseph Ward, speaking at a Wellington Automobile Club soeial, gave some figures illustrating tho development of the motor car in New Zealand. The total registrations on M&rch 31 were 124,015 in the North Island, and 96,570 in ■■the South Island. The number of new registrations in last 12 months was 27,674. Imports of motor spirit had doubled in \t l years, and vehicles increased from 3094 per annum to 18,787, besides motor cycles, which had increased from 1122 to 3558. In passenger and freight services alone last November 2215 vehicles were used, employing 2950 persons and carrying 1.982,220 passengers and 84,880 tons of goods per annum. Sir Joseph Ward also mentioned that the Highways Board expenditure had increased from £372,207 in 1925 to nearly £2,000,000 last year. It now had a declared mileage of 10,139. Alluding to the formation of a separate board for the South Island, he said he was sure it would be welcomed in that part of New Zealand, and remarked that it was good to let people have rows in" their own territory.
