TE KARAKA MEETING WEATHER MARS SUCCESS Despite i lie unpropitious weather conditions this morning, the committee lot' the Te Karaka Returned Soldiers Sports Clul) decided to carry on with thenmeeting. A cold westerly wind with occasional showers made conditions on

the ground uncomfortable 'both for competitors and .spectators, and during the morning there was only a small attendance. The popularity of the Easter meeting at Te Karaka was demonstrated by tiie large- entries received for most events, and had the weather remained line there would have been no doubt of the success of the function from all points of view. However, the best was done under die circumstances, and if the financial result is not up to expectations it will not be through want of effort on the pari of the energetic committee. Owing to the threatening weather the events were late in starting. The track was in splendid order. Results: lOOvds flat handicap.—First heat: G. H. Mills (9ivds) 1. H. White (B_yds) 2. W. MANUTUKE MEETING DISAPPOINTING ATTENDANCE Despite the fact that heavy rain fell this morning in Gisborne, the weather was more or, less favorable for the Mamituko Sports Club's sth annual meeting, held at Te Arni Domain today. The attendance early in the day Avas disappointing, but there was a hope that it would increase, as the day wore on. Splendid entries were, received in tiie equestrian events, and the performances of the placed competitors were of a good standard. The athletes found the going a litfTe heavy, and consequently times were slow, the committee did everything to make a success of the Junction, and if the meeting is a financial failure it will not be for want, of organisation. The results of the early events were

RUATORIA MEETING A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING The East Coast was rather more forttmate in its weather on Saturday than was Gisborno and the surrounding dis-

trict, and the Ruatoria Sports Club was able to hold its annual meeting under fairly satisfactory conditions. The attendance was good, and, competition in the, various .events very spirited Horse events, running races, and chopping handicaps comprised the. main attractions, and two competitions open to the general public, _ in the form or drop-kicking and weight estimating, drew dozens of post entries. The flag race and bending race on horseback hud W and! 15 entries respectively, and there were 14 entries in the maiden

horse jump. The chopping men patronised the sports well, each of the handicaps having 10 entries. The meeting was; conducted by a capable committee, with Mr. J. M. Reedy as president and Mr. A, W. Kirk as hon. secretary. A large number of stewards gave their services to the club, and each section of the meeting was carried on without unnecessary delays. The children's races were one of the features to which special attention was paid, and the club was well rewarded by the interest shown by parents in these events. The judges were: Messrs. J. Gates, horse events; J. Hogan and Hori Kaiwai, cycle and foot events; H. C. Beach, J. Ryan, and J. D. Fenn, chopping events. The work of the handicappers was responsible for some excellent finishes in all classes, and excitement ran high especially in connection with the chops.
