MISHAP IN FOG
LINER STRIKES ROCK HARBOR SAFELY REACHED (British Official Wireless.) 1?(!l , nooll . RUGBY, March 31. During a dense fog the 17,000-ton Anchor liner, Traiislyvania, when approaching Cherbourg after a six weeks Mediterranean cruise, struck the rock of La C'otpie, oft' Cape dc la Hague, early on Thursday morning. The accident is attributed to the exceptionally strong currents prevailing in this particularly dangerous portion ot the Normandy coast. The vessel had 300 passengers aboard. She sprang a leak and took a heavy list, and assistance was summoned. By jettisoning 500 tons of oil fuel, and by skilful handling, the Traiislyvania was able to make Cherbourg harbor without help and without any injury to the passengers or crew. Perfect order was maintained, and the resource of Captain Erskine was highly praised by all. It was his last trip m command' of tho Transylvania, and bo was due to retire on reaching England.
