OBITUARY

LATE MR. JAMES DOW A VETERAN TAILOR While engaged in a holiday task, Mv. Jamas Dow, of 508 Palmerston road, suldenlv became seriously ill last evening, atad succumbed within a shorn time. Mr. Dow had reached the- age of 63 years, and was a robust man so far as his general health went, though ho. sutfered from a physical difficulty of which he always made little. His death was entirely unexpected, and came as a great shock to his family and many friends.

The deceased was a veteran tailor, and had been well-known throughout Poverty Bay and the East Coast. Born in Timaru hi 1866, he lived the greater part of his life in South Canterbury, coming to Gisborne with his family about two years before the war, under engagement to Mr. A. Zachariah, of this town. A capable tradesman, he was with Mr. Zachariah for many years, conducting a branch of his establishment at Tolaga Bay for some time, and later joining his principal in the town business. At a later stage, he was employed by Mr. Geo. Holmes. His principal hobby was chess, and he was a prominent member of the Gisborne Chess Club, holding the championship of that organisation last year. On many occasions he was nominated to play'for the Gisborne club in telegraphic matches with clubs in other towns.

Deep sympathy will be proffered Mrs. Dow and her four sons, all of whom are in Gisborne. The sons are Messrs. Allan Hogan Dow, James Colin Dow, and Peter Herbert Dow, each of whom is in a different branch of the Public Service, and Mr. Ernest Harold Dow, who is employed by Messrs. Grant and Cooke, surveyors.

LORD MONTAGU OF BEAULIEU {Australian Press Assn.—United Service.) LONDON, .March 31. Tho death is record of Lord Montagu, of Beaulieu, aged 63 years.

Bom in 1866 and educated at Eton and Oxford, the late Lord Montagu was the eldest son of tho first baron of Beaulieu, and succeeded his father in 1905. In 1889 ho married tho daughter of the Marquis of Lothian, by whom hi had two daughters; his second marriage took place in 1620. to tho daughter of Major K. B. Crake, of the Rifle Brigade. the issue of this union comprising a .son and three daughters. Lord Montagu of Beaulieu was prominent m athletics, engineering and science. He stroked the winning eight for his varsity in 1837. and in later years was recognised as an authority upon oarsmanship. He travelled extensively in later year;;, and was interested in railway and transport matters, including tho more recent development of aviation. From 1892 to the time of his first marriage, he repre sented the New Forest seat in the House of Commons, and he hold various official appointments which he filled with credit. He was the founder and first editor of the motoring publication, "The Car,' and contributed fairly extensively to magazines and newspapers. As Brigadier-General, be commanded the 7th' Battalion of the Hants Territorials. and his administration of his estate of 10,000 acre* of the best Hampshire country was exemplary. The heir 1o his considerable estate is the Don. Edward John Barrington Douglas-Scott-Montagu, born in 1926 of tbejate baron's second marriage.

SIR GEORGE KNIBBS MELBOURNE, March 31. Tlio death is recorded of Sir George Knibbs, formerly Commonwealth Statistician, aged 71 years. The late Sir George Handley was bm\ in Sydney in 1858. He held appointments in a number of State departments, and during the war was commissioner for trado and industry and a member of the Munitions -Committee. He was associated with many technical bodies, and was a member of a number of Royal Com mis-, sions. From 1905 to 1921 be was Government Statistician. He represented Australia at several Imperial conferences.

MR. ALEXANDER E. WALKER

The death is reported from Sydney of Mr. Alexander E. Walker, aged 8-1 years, late police superintendent, who in the exciting times of early settlement shot Thunderbolt, the bushranger.
