THE WRONG TREES?

PINES FOE FOXTON BEACH That those responsible had been plantI jng pinus insignis trees at boxton beach '* in place of pinus maritima, was a matter > r ' brought forward at the last meeting of the Foxton Harbor Board by Mr. E. B. P. Holben, reports the Post. • The young plants, stated Mr. Holben, % wero supplied by the Forestry Deportment, and it appeared to him, from the k f ac t that tho tops were cut off when the [S. tre<ss grew beyond tho shelter of the if gaud dnnea, that pinus insignis had been supplied in error. gf The maritima species of pinus was ' • unaffected fciy salt spray, and it seemed a v pity that such an error had been made. | On the speaker’s motion, the board' is | to recommend to the beach improvement V committee tliat in future only pinus maritima and macrocarpa be planted. When the matter was refei-red to Mr. Duncan Mncpherson, Conservator of Forests at Palmerston Korth, he stated that the insignis variety of pine was growing at Tangimonna as well, if not better, than the pinus maritima. Both spraos, however, were liable to damage - hv salt spray. Tt was generally considered advisable to plant maritima as a first, shelter. With regard to macrocarpa, Mr. Maopherson stated that once this tree was firmly established it would thrive on the roast, but the difficulty was to establish it. He would not recommend it, ns his experience showed that a planting of macrocarpa was very easily lost.
