FIRE AT THAMES
MINE BATTERY BLAZE (Per Press Association."* THAMES, this day. An outbreak of fire on Saturday at 9.30 o'clock in the evening occurred in the smelting room of the big Moanatiari battery, when nearly the whole of that room was destroyed. Fortunately there was no wind, otherwise tho huge three-storey structure must have gone. The brigade, with only one lead of hose, effected a remarkable save.
The origin of the lire is not known. The Lucky Shot Co. only finished work at 1.30 p.m. that day, removing all their melted gold and silver. Everything was all right then. The insurance on the building was £3OOO. This is the last battery at Thames.
