N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS NEW 440 YARDS LADIES' RECORD (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, last night. The New Zealand amateur swimming championship carnival concluded at 'le Arc baths yesterday. Fine weather prevailed and there was a good attendance. One record established was in the 440 yards ladies' championship, which was won by Miss K. Miller (Wellington) in 6.6 2-5, or 1 1-osec. better than the record made by Miss G. iShand (Cantorbury). Miss Miller swam a great race from the start. After 200yds., she drew away from Miss JJ. Grant (Auckland) and won by a big margin. Another splendid performance was that of W. Cameron (Wellington), who won the 60yds. invitation scratch raco in 23 3-ssec. This beats by one-fifth of a second the best recorded time in Sew Zealand or Australia. Tho third outstanding swim was when Miss P. Itobcitson (Auckland), in the 100yds. ladies' handicap, covered the distance in 65 3-ssec, equalling the. standing record of Miss E. Stockley (Auckland) for the ICOycls. ladies' championship.

A close contest was witnessed between A. Stokes (Canterbury) and G. Bridson (Auckland) in the 440yds. men's championship. D. P. Lindsay (Auckland) did not defend his title. Bridson and Stokes swam level the whole way, and in an exciting finish Bridson won by a narrow margin. Bridson's time of 5.24 4-5 was only two-fifths of a second outside the record for the distance.

In tho 100yds. intermediate boys' brcaststroke championship the only competitor took the title. Miss L. Copplestone (Ashburton) won tho 220yds. ladies' brcaststroke championship by 20yds. from the only other competitor. She also secured the ladies' diving event, depriving Miss L. Hood (Hawke's Bay) of her title. R. C. Calder (Otago) retained his title as men's diving champion. The Yaldhurst Shield was won by Auckland, with Wellington ruuners-up, while the War Memorial Shield was won also bv Auckland.

The points were as follows:—Yaldhurst Shield : Auckland 44, Wellington 37, Canterbury 24. Ashburton 11, Otago 10, Wanganui 9, and Hawke's Bay 3. War Memorial Shield: Auckland 8, Otagb 3, Canterbury 2, and South Canterbury 1. Results:—-

In the ladies' State 150yds. championship, 13-year-old Jean Cocks, of Bondi, defeated the title-holder, Miss Edna Davcy, in the time of 1.45 1-5, making a new Australian record, six seconds under Miss Fanny Durack's time, and only one-fifth of a second outside Miss Gertrude Ederle's world's record. Dulcic Kaino was third.
