(Press Assn. Telegrams.) The re-trial of Tyrer. tho Porirua Mental Hospital attendant, who is alleged to have, assaulted a patient, commenced at Wellington to-day. Evidence on fho lines of the first trial, at which the jurv disagreed, is being given. Conciliation Council proceedings commenced on Friday in the Union Co. Cooks and stewards’ dispute. When the proceedings were resumed on {Saturday. Mr. .Smith, for the Union Co., said the' granting of the demands for new wages would mean an immediate expenditure of another £62,800 per annum, let alone the claims that, would be made by other ratings. He suggested in all seriousness that'the claims should be dismissed as frivolous. The peak of the hill, in his opinion, liad been reacted in the matter of wages' and conditions, and there was nothing to warrant the employees' claims. This morning the claims of tho galley stall's are being considered, entailing 'demands amounting to about £2 10s"a month, though in th 6 case of butchers it is £4 11s.
Wi Waite, 56, who was injured in a collision -between motor ears driven by Messrs. Burmestor and Lido at Waihou bn February 2, died in Te Aroint Hospital. The inquest was adjourned after evidence of. identification had ibeetl given. The 22-montlis-old (.laughter of Air. and Mrs. D. C. Cawdery was accidentally drowned in a, water trough on a farm at Oroua Downs on Saturday evening. The child visited a milking shed, and when it failed to return a search revealed the body in the trough. A verdict of accidental drowning was returned at the inquest to-day. "Learn to swim" week was initiated in Hamilton to-day, 300 children being taught- by members of the Ladies' Swimming Clubs, Old Boys' Club, and others. The movement was initiated us the result of the mnnW of drowning accidents in the district.
