(Herald Correspondent.) Mrs. H. 11. Hickling is absent from the district, attending the wedding of a friend.—Mrs. P. Brewster is staying in Gisborne.—Mrs. Then. Stewart is absent on holiday.—Mrs. J. Arthur is staying in Gisborne. —Mr. Gleuuy, of Tikikino, lias now taken over Mr. William Stokes’ property j • Mr. and Mrs. Stokes leave Nuhaka on February 22. Mr. 11. Austin has commenced his contract for metalling part of Richardson's road. A contract has been let for improvements to the Morere hill; severaL of the worst corners are to be widened, the grade reduced, and metalling done. COASTAL RAILWAY LEAGUE. An important meeting of the Nuhaka Coastal Railway League was presided over by Mr. J. Dooley, and there were also present: Messrs. W. A. Porter, W. Sturm, P. Brewster, Jells, Austin, Mayo, Boyle, Fames, and several others who arrived later. The chairman explained that the object of the meeting was to appoint a deputation to lay before thb two Ministers of the Crown when they visited the district the urgent need of proceeding with the coastal railway route. The following were appointed a deputation to meet the Ministers, with power to add to their numbers : Messrs. K. 13. Crombie, Dooley, Porter, Sturm, Brewster, Fames, Boyde, Jells, Austin, Tidswell, Tod, Tail, Mayo, Hiclding, Taylor (Wliakaki), Johnstone and A. Rare (Opoutama), Whaanga, and the Rev. W. Mataira. Messrs. Crombie, Tidswell, 1 and Dooley were appointed speakers, and Messrs. Dooley and Brewster were appointed a special committee with power to act. The question of choosing land for Fuser settlement was discussed, and the success from a district standpoint of the Omana Soldier Settlement was referred to, and finally Messrs. Dooley, Mayo, and Sturm were appointed a committee to draw up a list of suitable properties and bring them before the notice of the Ministers for closer settlement. In connection with the Morere baths, Mr. Porter was asked to bring before the Minister the need of a greater number .of larger baths being provided. The question of Opoutama as a future resort and the constant demand for setlions on which to build huts is also to bo brought before the Ministers. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Dooley for convening and presiding at the meeting. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. The Nuhaka Women’s Institute gave an afternoon in honor of Mrs. William Stokes, one of the indefatigable workers of the branch since its inception. The gathering was held in Sister May’s home, and the vice-president, Mrs. W. A. Porter, presided in the absence of the president, Mrs. G. D. Tod. The following were present: Mesdames Shaw, Suckling, Stokes, Steed, lv. Stewart, Steele, YV. Nepia, S. Black, Gordon, A. Richardson, and Joblin, and Misses Turner, Ranger, and Steffans. The first part of the afternoon was of a social nature, and Mesdames S. -Black and C. McKenzie won the competitions. ’Afternoon tea, provided by the ladies of the branch, was dispensed, after which Mrs. Porter expressed the great regret qf every member of the institute at the loss they were suffering in the removal from the district of Mrs. Stokes. The branch had already suffered the loss of several highly esteemed members, and the members had now met to wish Mrs. Stokes all health and prosperity in her new home. Ever since the inception of the branch Mrs. Stokes had devoted herself to the task of making it a success, and her wise counsel would be missed greatly. Nuhalca’s loss would be Waipawa’s gain. Tho members sang “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow,” and in a few appropriate words Mrs. Stokes expressed her appreciation of the gathering and of their good wishes. The afternoon concluded with musical items, Mrs. Suckling presiding at the piano, with Miss Steffanes as violinist.
