At the sanitary inspectors and health officers' refresher course in Wellington, Dr. 11. A. Shore, medical officer oi health of Wanganui-Rorowhenua district, gave an address on "Immunity and Immunisation." He described how the human body resisted disease, how it acquired resistance, and how resistance could be given 'by artificial means, the latter against such diseases as diphtheria, smallpox and typhoid, lie discussed the means by which immunity was given, and Hie degree of immunity resulting. Members of the High School Old Students' Association executive tendered their compliments last evening to Mr. K. Woodward, a member of the executive whoso wedding to Miss Mavis Leslie takes place tins week. Mr. A. Blaekhurn presided over the gathering, and ~„ behalf of the executive handed to Mr. Woodward a gold pencil, as a token of appreciation of bis work for the association- Several members present, (endorsed the chairman's eulogies of Mr. Woodward's work, and the recipient of their gift made an appropriate response. Messrs. .1. !'.. Broadhursl and 11. A. Barton, two of Cdsborne's representatives at the Harbor Boards' conference in Auckland, have returned home. Mr. T. Corson, the third delegate from Uisborne, will not return for two or three da vs. The delegates Mi-re not instructed in'detail as to their exercise of the local board's votes at the conference, and 110 remits were sent forward from Gisborne, so that their report to the next meeting of the board will on general lines mil v. The outstanding questions at tins conference related to the question of centralisation of shipping at the main ports, the opinion of the delegates being overwhelmingly in favor of decentralisation, as might be expected, in view of the fact that centralisation would damage the overseas connections of the vast, 'majority of New Zealand's pert authorities. One other resolution of real interest to Gishorne was that recommending the Government to procure an efficient dredgingsunit for the use of minor harbor boards which are not, in a position to purchase dredging plant and discard it on the completion of their excavation programmes.
