REBELS STILL ACTIVE

THE AFGHAN UPRISING JALALABAD BOMBED (Australian Press Assn. —United Service.) DELHI, Dec. 30. • News from Kabul states that after a heavy bombardment on Boxing Day some buildings, including the power house, were wrecked by shell fire and windows broken by rifle fire. A water tank was riddled with bullets. An Afghan watchman in the legation \vaskilled and 'two gardeners wounded. The opposing forces used the legation walls as cover. The rebels captured two ammunition dumps at Pughman. Kabul is in darkness..as a result of rebels diverting the Sailing' river, on the channel of which the power house is situated. The tribesmen near the Indian frontier have quietened and the KurraniParachinar route has been re-opened. Jalalabad is still surrounded by rebels, and the city’s food supplies are cut off. Many refugees from the Kabul legations have left for home. The Afghan Trade Agent at Peshawar reports that peace has been definitely concluded with the Khugiani tribesmen, and Ali Ahmedjan, exGovernor of Kabul, is negotiating a settlement with the Shinwaris and the Mohmands. There were further evacuations from Kabul legations yesterday. The air force planes moved a total of (it) women and children and members of the legations, who are now in Peshawar. The former relate thrilling stories of their experiences. They said that, during the fighting round the legation, everybody was confined to a central room, which was barricaded with furniture. There were many narrow escapes. Afghan aircraft bombed the rebels at Jalalabad, killing (100. It is feared that if the city surrenders there will be a massacre by tribesmen.
