WELLINGTON V. POVERTY BAY

Though the strongest side was not available on account of the first XT being engaged in n, Blanket Shield fixture, much interest has been evinced in the visit of the Wellington cricket team to Gisborne, and the visitors came with a good reputation. Consequently there was a good muster of spectators at the Oval to-day to witness the match agairfstthe Poverty Ray representatives. White’ll- IT Aitken. C. Havmnn, JRix-Trott, K. Robertson, and A. W. Gibson. Poverty Bay : C. Dow. G. Lockett, G. J. Robertson, ft. Winter, T. Bennett, Joe Scholium, \\. Blair, J. .leiuiings, !-'■ Thomson, F. .James, \Y. J. Scholium, and N. Tasker. The umpires are Messrs. T. Sharp and P. Martin. Though yesterday it was feared that the wicket would crack badly, it has shown considerable improvement, and should stand up to the demands of the inter-provincial match fairly well. Poverty Bay won the loss, and sent in Robertson and Lockett. Runs came quickie in tlii* (list over, Robertson scoring a 2 and J, while his partner a -• .Lockett failed to see out the next over, however, for after Robertson had snicked a single, Lockett was bowled by K. Robertson who, with O’Connor, had opened Wellington’s attack. ** Joe Scholium joined G. J. Robertson, and they treated the Wellington bowling with respect during the next, three overs, two of which failed to yield a single run. Scholium commenced then to hit out, scoring a brace of 2’s and a bound,ary off one over from K. Robertson. The batsmen contented themselves with singles in the next over, ,qnd then Scholium resumed ag’ grossivo tiictic's, taking a boundary and a two off Robertson. Disaster attended his next stroke, however, for off Robertson's next, which lie hit to the leg, O’Connor caught him out.—2—2B —IS. AV. A.
