LAWN TENNIS

THIS MORNING’S GAMES PROGRESS MUCH SLOWER Owing to the fact that individual players figure in several divisions which have reached an advanced stage, progress was much slower at the Gisborne (.Tub s courts this morning, when the Poverty Bay and East Coast Association's tennis tournament was continued. The heat was trying for the players, who had to face one strenuous match after another, but the humidity was far less noticeable than on Saturday afternoon. Tho morning was occupied, in the main, in bringing all sections of the tournament not yet completed to the final stage, and oniy one actually decisive match was played, this being in the men's handicap doubles. In connection with this division, defaults had been re gistered in the semi-finals, and tiie two pairs left in- were able to commence their decisive engagement fresh and keen, in this they had an advantage over the survivors of other divisions, some of whom were called upon to display the utmost tenacity in order to avoid defaulting critical games. In one case, two lady players in the semi-final of a singles division carried their lirst set to b —7, practically every game going to deuce once or twice at least. It was obvious, in the circumstances, that the winner of their three-set match would be unable to produce winning form against the survivor of the other semi-final, who has had the benefit of the week-end lest.
