THE ORCHESTRIAN
GRAMOPHONE AND RADIO Patrons at the Palace theatre on Saturday evening had the privilege of hearing a distinct innovation to Gisborne, i'or some time past gramophone records have been played during the interval, and the music lias been greatly appreciated by those who prefer to sit. in the theatre. The new invention comprises the gramophone and radio, and takes the place of small orchestras, especially at matinees, concerts, dances, and parties. The Orchestnan is manufactured by the British Thompson Houston Co. Ltd., and is 'controlled in New Zealand by the National Electrical and Engineering Co. The instrument has been installed in a number of large theatres and dance balls throughout the Dominion and the results have met with every success. Either vocal or orchestral numbers can be heard distinctly in any part of the building, while the volume may be regulated^
to suit the various conditions. .The ! music is interpreted without' static or Thterruptions, this being due to an electric pick-up, while by tth'6 use pL’two (buttons attached to the side of the ’gramophone cabinet delightful fade-out Effect is given. "* ‘A The gramophone arrangement consists of a low cabinet with two turntables arid fitted with two pick-up units, the whole [being worked by electricity and operated (by small buttons. The records are ’placed on the turntables and the tone iana is lowered in the same manner as in [playing gramophones. • After passing [through two stages of amplification the -sound travels through a . filter .which extracts all roughness and. harshness;'arid gives a smooth production. It is then transferred to a specially constructed* loud speaker, which is 1 , situated on . the. Stage and is capable of sufficient volume to fill the largest building.’ The instilment, is man ipuiated from the . ojtetafeir's box at the rear of the dress circle, ajthorigh it may be handled within a few yards of the speaker.
