Arbuthnot Lane said canned fruits minimised health at the Health Visitors' Conference, at which Dr. A. Livingstone, holding aloft a fin of peaches, said: "This is a yellowed sepulchre. England is being canned to the detriment of manhood. What with canned beef, fruit, this, and that, there is no energy left. Canning destroys the sunshine of fresh fruit, which, is nature's own tooth brush."
