OBITUARY

SIR WILLIAM MAXWELL

.Australian Press Assn.-United Service.) LONDON, December 26. The death has occurred of Captain Sir William Maxwell, the well-known war correspondent.

Few men have had the experience in journalism that fell to the lot of Sir vVilliam Maxwell. Commencing his literary career with the Standard and the Daily Mail, he became prominent us the result of his march with Kitchener to Khartoum, when ho was present at the capture of Omdurman, and where he received a medal and clasp. Later he accompanied the Herman Emperor through the Holy Land Syria! He took an active part in the South African War, being besieged at Ladysmith, and later going to Kimbcrley. Ho was With Lord Roberts' army in every engagement from Bloemfontein to Lydenourg, and saw lunger at Delagoa Bay. He travelled with the King and Queen on their tour of the Empire, and travel led extensively with tho King in his yacht, throughout the Russo-Japanese VVar lie was with the Japanese army; ho attended the Delhi Durbar; was present at the Boxer rising; was with the Bulgarian forces during the Balkans War, and servedi throughout the European War, his work being rewarded, with a knighthood. DR. DAWSON TURNER (Australian Tress Asm.-Omtad Service.) LONDON, December 26. Tho death is reported of Dr. Dawson Turner, as the outcome of 30 years' use of X-ray treatment. '_'.,' The late Dr. Turner was 71 years of age. He graduated at Edinburgh and subsequently studied on the Continent, devoting special attention to X-ray and radium. For 14 years he was medical electrician to the- Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh. Mrs. Lorna Marion Kerr, wife of Mr. F. G. Kerr, of Gisbome, late of Napier, passed away with distressing suddenness on Sundav in the Gisbome Hospital, at the early age of 23 years. Deceased, states the Napier Telegraph, who had only been married six months previouslv, was very well known in Napier, having spent all her earlv; life there. Of a bright and loving disposition, she won the hearts of all who knew her, and the sincere sympathy of a wide circle of friends will be extended to her sorrowing husband and parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Lincoln, of Ellison street, Napier.
