The 'Government Tourist Department at Wellington has been besieged by those wishing to turn the holiday season to account. Local people had the advantage of being able to make reservations several months ahead, with the result that all the main centres of attraction in the country are fully hooked. Late arrivals from overseas have found that they cannot be accommodated as they Avould wish during the busiest period from December 24 to January 3. Their itinerary has thus had to be arranged so as to take in the tourist resorts later in the season. Rotorua is still in demand, hut no accommodation there is now obtainable. It is understood that a new era of prosperity is looming in the near future for Millerton, one of the Westport Coal Co. 's chief mining centres. In the existing works the lire is well stopped-off. Immediately behind and quite clear of the fire area is a virgin field of fine hard coal equal to the best elsewhere on the coast. It is be-j big opened out. The management has selected a new route to this field that will facilitate handling of the output. It is the company's intention to mechanically hoist men to their work and to transport the coal by an aerial system from the now area down to the first brake at Millerton. There will be no necessity to alter any of the present rolling stock. Provision is being made at the bi»s to facilitate the handling of the coal.—Lyttelton Times.
