The weather was fifle, following the rain of Boxing Day, while the wicket wa3 drying. Manawatu completed their first strike for 221, to which ,the Bay replied with 195. ' When play ceased on the previous day, it appeared that the home side would be dismissed for under the 200 mark, but a surprising last-wicket partnership between McVicar and Tarrant prevented this.

When Manawatu resumed ,to-day, a bad rot set in, three wickets falling for as many runs. Then Tarrant joinMcVicar, who had been at the wickets throughout the innings, and the pair took the score to 221. When three short of his century, McVicar terminated the innings by returning a delivery to Evans. He had scored well after an uncertain beginning. The most outstanding feature of the Bay's innings was the fine scoring of their captain. Shepherd, who was unbeaten with 85, made in a little over two hours. His tally included five sixes and was compiled in vigorous fashion, with strokes all round the wicket. Stephenson also contributed an attractive 60, though he gave some chances. Manawatu were at the wickets for an hour in their second strike, and had lost one wicket for 30 wuen stumps were drawn.
