OLYMPIC CLUB LAST NIGHT'S CARNIVAL Owing to the threatening weather mid the possibility of the function being postponed only a moderate attendance of swimming enthusiasts attended the Olympic Surf juid Swimming Club's opening carnival in the High School baths last evening. Nevertheless, the conditions were exceptionally pleasant, and a splendid evening's sport was witnessed. The programme was well vonducted, allowing the who'.e of the nine events to be completed in a little over mi hour. R. Colebourne was undoubtedly the star performer of the evening lie sue ceeded in annexing the lC*'ds mens handicap by n good margin, and later won the 66 2-3yds men's handicap in con vincing style. In the latter event an exciting tussle ensued between J. Robinson and Colebourne, both of whom started off the same mark. Swimming with a long, steady stroke Colebourne gained a slight advantage over his opponent in the second heat. The final was a good race, Colebourne just managing to get home 2ft ahead of T. Wauchop. Both the schoolboys' handicap and the ladies' event were closely contested, a fact that reflects credit on the handicapper, Mr. 0. F. l'altridge. The eorl'u dive was disappointing. Only five competitors tried conclusions in 1 his event, which was won easily by N. Handricks. Eight /swimmers competed in the handicap dive, and the standard was good for the beginning of the season. The 100yds family relay handicap and the 66 2-oyds dual relay handicap provided splendid races, the latter resulting itt a comfortable win for Miss N. Warren and V. Olouston. Two yards separated second and third. 33 l-3yds schoolboys' handicap (4 starters): R. Cederwall (3sec.) 1, J. Knox (2sec.) 2, O. Handricks (Ssec.) 3. Won ty two yards, with five yards between second and third.

33 l-3yds ladies' handicap.—First heal (4 starters): Misses M. Law (6scc.J 1, P. Crawford (4sec.) 2, W. Thompson (3sec.) 3. Second heat (3 starters): Misses J. Richardson (scr.) 1. N.
