Another stage in the electrification of the Christchurch-Lyttelton line was made when the overhead wires were erected in Lyttelton yards. The erection of the wires through the tunnel itself will not be done until the last moment in order to avoid damage to them by the smoko from steam locomotives. Tho position now is that only detail work has to be done to complete the system, which should bo in operation by the end of next month.'
Trouble appears to be brewing between a section of tho Blackball miners and tho management owing to the latter refusing the union’s demands that the turn system be used, when employing new employees (writes a Greymouth correspondent). The management announced that they would not agree to compulsory methods regarding the engagement of fresh men, but were quite prepared to consider cases of hardship and the applications of persons who have homes and parents in Blackball, when engaging men who were dismissed on account of the adoption of the single shift system at the mine. However, direct actionists were of opinion that the turn system as applied before the agreement should ho enforced. A resolution to that effect was ultimately carried and will bo submitted to other unions for further discussion.
