(Herald Correspondent;.) The following candidates from the' pakeha school were successful at the recent proficiency examinations; jorie Godding, Janet Robertson, find! Reg. Herbert. The latter boy has liovv! moved into Wairoa. All the schools in the district have Jiad successful examinations. On Tuesday at the pakelut tjie parents’ day and breaking up function will eventuate. Bishop Bennett, first representative of t|ie Maori race to Ire consecrated to that position, is to visit Nuhalca next Monday, and will, be present at tha annual fete of the Anglican Sunday school. One of the greatest successes of the year is the breaking up function of the native school. This school has on its stall' three assistants, besides its headmaster, Mr. N". South, and a roll call of about 160 pupils, and the natural talent of tho Maori is such that! always ensures a crowded hall. This year the school expects to reach peak mark in its rendition of “The Wishing Cap.” Much sympathy is extended to Mrs. Jeffs, who received an urgent summons to her mother’s deathbed iri Ashburton, «J:id pjfter travelling' night and- day for two days, just reached her mother, Mrs. Porter, before the end. menl. The monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute, hold at Sister May’s was presided over by Mrs. W r . A. Porter, vicepresident, in, the absence of the president. Owing to the unsettled weather the attendance was not up to the average, but an enjoyable afternoon of a social character eventuated. Great interest is being manifested in the picnio to ho held on January 31 at Opoutuma, which is a new venture for the institute and to which members of the Wairoa branch of the N.Z.F.TJ. have heeu invited. A sale of Christmas gifts was held, and fanQjy work was exhibited and worked. Mrs. Shaw, Miss Mayo am! Sister May were hostesses* for the afternoon tea.
