MAORIS IN POLITICS
A member of the Rutuua party, in answer to a question, stated that the four Maori candidates were all standing as Independents, and would support whatever party would accede to the requests of the Katana party as laid down in the manifesto issued Dy Katana, which had been circulated laying down a policy for the general uplifting of the Maori race. The party was very hopeful of all four candidates being returned, and they had bpen cordially received during recent visits to their electorates. This was the first occasion on which a Katana party with the sanction of Katana, had decided to nominate its own candidates. When Katana’s son stood in 1922 for Western Maori seat, he did'so at the request of only a section of the Katana party in that electorate. The Maori added Hint his race now realised that there had been too many titled Maori members of Parliament, and that these titles had been bestowed, not for services to the Maori people, but for services to the Government.
