ROWING
G.R.C. FIRST TRIALS First-round races ia the Gisborne Rowing Club’s first trial fours series wei'e continued last evening, on the threequarter mile course on the Taruheru River. The state of the tide, combined with the delay in filling the crews, cut the evening's programme short, and only two races were conducted, leaving the round unfinished.
In the first event of the evening, K. A. Woodward (sir.), S. Scott, Morrison and Ball were defeated by H. Hankey (str.), Allen, Somervell and Hooke. In the lastmeritioned crew the No. 3 was substituting for an absent member. From the start, the crews went off together, and they were still level at the Ballanee street bridge, where a mishap in Woodward’s boat threw that four hack. Hankey won with clear water between the boats.
Rather unexpectedly, W. Kennedy (str.), 11. Hunter, Do Costa and Gray defeated G. Forbes (str.), McGregor, Primrose and Watt, in the second race of tho evening. The winners went away from the start, where Forbes had some trouble, and it was not long before there was elt#r water between the boats. It was evident that the losing crew had not. the condition to overcome the disadvantage in the later stages, and the race went to Kennedy by a good margin.
This evening O. Shaw will meet Foster in the concluding race of the first, round, and second round races will be rowed between Hankey and Kennedy, and between Fromm and Jeune.
