CONCERT AT MANGAPAPA

BRIGHT ENTERTAINMENT

Perhaps one of the most successful and entertaining concerts given in the Poverty Buy district during tiie past year was presented to a large audience in the Oddfellows Hall, Ainngapapa, last evening. The entertainment was organised by Mrs. G. Witters for the purpose of augmenting the funds of Knox Church. Undoubtedly the work of the organiser was responsible for the outstanding success of the function, and noth withstanding counter-attractions the spacious hall was filled to capacity, many people being unable to gain admission. . . The lengthy programme comprised items by several performers of unusual talent, a number of whom weie successful competitors at the recent Gisborne Competitions. Warm applause _ greeted the efforts'of the performers m most instances. One of the features of the entertainment, was a, display ol limbering and tumbling !, by Miss Fthue Paltridge, s pupils, while Misses E. Paltridge and Joan Haddock gave an interesting exhibition of aeronatie_ work. Other outstanding items were contributed by Miss y. Paltridge, who delighted her audience with a classical dance, Miss S. Monro with a toe dance, and a fancy dance by Miss -Joan Melior, while Miss v\. Paitiridge was seen in a Grecian dance. 'Phe hall was artistically decorated with colored crepe streamers stretching from one end to the other, while the stage presented a beautiful background for the dainty gowns worn by the performers. Huge, howls of roses, lilies and irises bedecked the stage, and many pre,ttv bamboo paints were arranged at the rear, the work having been carried out by Mr. G. E. Barton. At the conclusion of each item the lady performers were presented with beautiful bouquets, while, the younger members were handed boxes of sweets.' The entertainment opened with an instrumental trio by Miss Kathleen Adair (piano), and Messrs. F. Neil (violin) and F. Wise (’cello), their renditions being greatly appreciated by the audience. Little' Joyce Witters scored a success with a song, “Daddy anfl Babsy, and Was compelled to reply with an encore number before retiring front the stage. Other items were rendered as follow: Song, Miss J. Hill, “Nightfall attSe.a”; son” in costume. “The Second Minute, bv Heather Tirio; Mrs. F- Auld. “Mornin" and You ; Miss_ Margaret Corson, “Break of Day”; duet in costume, Misses Denton. “The Old Rustic Bridge”; Mr. S. Adair, “Give Me Youth and a Day ; duet, Miss Margaret Corson and Mr. B. Allan, “One Fleeting Hour”: Mr. F. Neill “The. Boat Song”; Miss Muriel Mortimer, “Mumps”; Miss Monica McKay and Hr. R. McKay, “Waiata I‘oi,” accompanied by the ukuhle. A recitation was given by Hiss Gretehen Ivane, entitled , ’“Grandma;s Angel.”’ Misfces Audrey and Kathleen Aclair were heard in several pianoforte solos, while piano duets were played by Misses June Adair and Mavis G un, entitled, “Autumn Idyll ” and “Buy Bias.” by Misses T. and M. Coop. Miss Mavis Holmes delighted with a. violin solo, while a character dance, •‘Gretehen, ’ by Miss .Joy Sealv. and a whistling solo by Hr. ll.' Witters completed Hie programme. Accompaniments were played by Hisses Audrey and Kathleen Adair, Marjory Allan and Mr. R. Witters. At the conclusion of (he performance the Rev. C. H. Bowden expressed thanks in Mrs. Witters apd the performers for the bright and successful entertainment, and mentioned that the church would benefit considerably through the function.
