PENSIONS

NATIONAL SCHEME FAVORED BY FARMERS (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, last night. The introduction of a compulsory national provident scheme wgs advocated on behalf.of the mid-Capterbury executive by Mr. J. R- Dalton, of Dletlivcu, wheu speaking at the .conference b! the New Zealand Farmers’ Union to-night. Dir. Dalton said it must he admitted that the various pension schemes were becoming more and more of a burden on the taxpayers. Had a compulsory scheme heen brought ip 40 years ago there would have- been a fund sufficiently large to pay all the pensions to-day. In a low years’ time half the people would be receiving pensions, and the other half would luive to pay them. The speaker said there were many people who, when' paid a cheque, squandered the money, when a portion should bo set aside for their future and their declining years. Mr." W. 11. Allen, of Tirau, said it had to be remembered that any pension scheme had to come out of the productivity of the soil. , Dir. R. I). DuxfieUl, of Horotiu, said lie, took it that such a scliemo would supersede the present old ago pension and charitable aid/ schemes. He thought the proposal might be referred to the Dpminion executive to report to the next conference. Dir. A. E. Harding, of Mapgawhare, stated that the civil service bad its superannuation scheme, and he did not see why there should not be somo shell scheme for the whole country. After other speakers had expressed their views both in favor of and against tho proposal, the following motion was carried : “ That the Government ho again urged to introduce a compulsory national provident scheme.”
