OPENING IN WET WEATHER SOME KEEN COMPETITION The Poverty Bay Sheep Dog Trial Club was not favored with the best of weather for the opening of their annual trials yesterday, but those who braved the 'elements saw some good competition in the first class, which was completed in the afternoon. There were only 21 competitors, as against 55 in the fame class last year, but the long period of wet weather, the approach of the height of lambing operations, ahd sickness among some of the prospective eompetiliors' families were factors mitigating against the retention of last year's standard of entries. Despite the decreased competition in point of view oi' numbers, the work of the dogs was well up to standard, and the winner of the first class yesterday gave a. fine performance. The sheep, loaned by Mr, T. Holden, gave every .satisfaction, and behaved well. The event, which was completed yesterday was the head, pull, and hold in ring,'the maXimtfm points for which were SO, made up as follows : Head 18, pull If), hold 4. and command 12. In the wttults given below the points are grvtm in the order indicated. ThP second event, head, pull and yard, was in progress this morning with 21 compel iters.
