The Bavin Government is taking definite action to solve the coal trade depression. The Premier stated that the Government will insist on a reduction in the price of coal, the high price of which is imposing a heavy burden on the railways, tramways, and other facilities, in addition to keeping up manufacturing costs. Overseas trade, which absorbed 3,500.000 tons in 1913, now stood at oniy 1,500,000 tons. Inter-State trade similarly had dwindled. A conference of parties interested, including the Government, is now trying t.i arrive at a basis of compromise which >viii enable the industry to be put on a stable footing.
