WRECK OF TRAWLER

THOMAS BEYAN VISITED SALVAGE PARTY'S SUCCESS The first salvage expedition to the trawler Thomas Bryan. which was wrecked near Cape Colville on June 10, met. with success, and the auxiliary schooner Katie S. is awaiting favorable weather to bring about three tons ot gear to Auckland. The wreck was bought by Captain A. Pearce, and Messrs. M. Forsvth and A. Bentley, of Auckland, who'chartered the Katie S for salvage operations. The material already stripped from the wreck justified the speculation. - The. results have been gratifying. and there is every prospect of securing a great deal more ge%," saifl Capliiin Pearce, who returned from the Great Barrier with Mr. Eovsyth. Captain" Pearce said the easterly weather might prevent furl her work for a week. It was hoped to secure the winches and some engine-room fittings on a second tup. There was a variety of gear ready ior collection, and other fittings had been loosened readv for removal. The salvage now on the Katie S included three anchors,- anchor cable, copper piping, a trawl net, and other fishing gear. The Katie 9 arrived at Port Charles early last week. It was found there was' no hope of refloating the trawler, which had moved a further 2Cft. over the rocks and was held firmly at bow and stern. The salvage gang proceeded to the wreck bv launch, and was followed bv the schooner. The weather was ideal for the work, and the salvage vessel was brought alongside the wreck. With hammers,' cold, chisels, and spanners, the party worked on tho steep decks and in tho partly-flooded engineroom. The schooner returned to shelter in the evening, and when the wreck was visited next day the weather was not favorable for a continuation of the work. The trawler was also then moving slightly in the sea. On Wednesday a heavy sea was running al the scene of the wreck, and it was decided to make for Trvphena. Since nothing can be done during the easterly weather, the Katie S will discbarge the first collection of salvaged gear before another visit to the trawler.
