Many fine long-haired' goat skins are obtained from the Earnest Islands at the far end of Mason's Bay, Stewart Island. The inner island of recent years has become attached to the mainland owing ■to a silting up of the sand. It is not known how the goats came to be there, but probably they were put there by the early day whalers. Some of the goat skins are of a very pretty fawn color.and make excellent floor fugs.
