TAXING N.Z. SHEEP

PROPOSAL IN AUSTRALIA IN INTERESTS OF BREEDERS "It has been proposed to put a tax of £2 2s each on New Zealand stud flock sheep which have not been passed by an inspector and tattooed when they arrive in Australia," said Mr. 11. T. Little, a well-known North Canterbury run-holder, who returned from Sydney by the Marama.

Mr. Little, with several other Canterbury sheepfarmers, has been visiting the Royal Sheep Show, in Sydney. He says that the British 'breeds of New Zealand sheep sent to Australia are very much in demand and are of much better quality than those bred in the Commonwealth.

"A large proportion of the NewZealand sheep sent over for the show should never have gone," said Mr. Little, "as tfhey are not the best we can produce. That is one of the reasons why the £2 2s tax has been proposed. Such action would be in the interests of the breeders. In Australia all the Corriedales are branded, and it would be a good thing for New Zealand if this were done here." Mr. Little mentioned that Mr. Donald Grant, of Timaru, obtained 75. guineas for a champion Border Leicester ewe which he sen't over for the show. The Australians produce fine quality merinos, he said, but New Zealand more than holds her own with the British breeds, such aa Romneys, Border Leicesteiis and Corriedales.
