A new process for making sugar out of sawdust, was recently'described by Professor Erik Haegglund, of Abo, at the Coal and \yood Chemistry Conference, held in Stockholm, states Capital, lie reported that from (id to 70 per cent; of sawdust by weight could be ('(inverted into sugar by this new process. It is being tried on a commercial scale at Geneva, and already fruitful results have been' achieved. As regards Sweden, where forestry :is one of the dominating industries, and where most of the sugar has to bo imported, file method holds out immense possibilities. Several hundred thousand tons of “wood-sugar” can be produced annually from easily aeeessibale raw materials in Sweden.
