Grace's old homestead, a rough motor road is already formed along the Tongariro River, and numerous tracks have been cut along that and other rivers. A new road has also just been surveyed from the Tongariro straight across the swamp to the township, which will bring a thirsty angler within a mile of his favorite poison, instead of four or I five miles as at present. Camps are permitted within a chain of the river hanks on payment of a small fee; for 1 10s a week one can select a permanent site of 10 yards square, and boil his hilly there from now till the millen- ■ nitim. other methods of peaceful penetration, more or less unnoticed by the simple native, has now become the direct owner of at least half of the Tongariro frontages above the bridge already mentioned, and will probably open up more ground before long. Maori rights have just been bought in the hind between the river and the new fish hatchery. This is an ideal site for a permanant fishing camp, and only a few chains distant from the Kowahi flat selected recently for Hie Duke's camp. The hatchery is now complete and reac|y to commence operations as soon as tlie fishing season closes. Now that the "State has taken control of the fishing areas, development should go ahead.
