THE APPLE EXPORT
RECORD EARLY VARIETIES EXPANSION IN POVERTY BAY 1 , The early evidences in the orchards in Poverty Bay made it. apparent, that there would he a record production this season, and it was estimated that- this district would ho able to export 12,Gin cases of apples this year, or approximately three times the number sent away last year. A quantity of tho early apples, Cox’s Orange Pippin, have been picked And shipped to Wellington, and in comparison with the early returns of past years there is an indication that the estimate of 12,000 cases for the season will not be too great. To date a total of 340 cases of apples have been sent to Wellington for shipment to Efigland, and it is thought that, in all probably 500 cases of the early apples will lie exported. This is 10 times the quantity of the early ones sent away last season, and a considerable increase oli the previous season. Last year only 48 cases of early apples were sent away, while 145 were sent the previous year. The remarkable increase this year is stated to be solely on account of heavier production. Those shipped to date are said to be of particularly fine quality. A considerable area, lis been planted in new orchards in Poverty Bay, and for export purposes they should coino into bearing within the next three or four years. It is calculated by Mr G. H. Mclndoe, orchard instructor at, Gisborne, that within three or four years the export of apples from Gisborne should reach 20.000 cases.
