EARTHQUAKE MOVES ISLAND
SEATTLE, Nov. 18. Bogoslof Island, south of St. Georges Island, in the Aleutian group, was moved four miles south and one mile east of its charted position by the volcanic disturbances of some weeks ago, Commander James P. Ilottel, of the cutter yesterday on his return from Alaskan waters. A huge volcano 37dft. above the sea level rose up out. of the water and is still emitting steam and vapor, Commander Hottol said. “We called at Bogoslof Island on our way to St. Georges,” he said, “and found that the island had apparently moved five miles from its former position. “Conditions about the island are much changed since the survey of 1907. At that time there was a passage between Castle Bock and Grenigik but that has now been closed.” The volcanic disturbance and the moving of Bogoslof Island was reported in Seattle about a month ago by other Alaskan ships. It was said that, the volcanic disturbance threw sea lions into panic and killed millions of fish.
