OBITUARY

MR. L. H. McHARDY Mr. L. 11. McHardy, of Blackhead, Hawkes Bay, whose- death on Saturday was reported in yesterday's issue, was second son of the late Mr. Alexander McHardy. The late Mr. Leslie McHardy was bom at Napier 64 years ago, and received his early education at the Napier Grammar School For a number of years he was with his father.and his brother, Mr. P. iA. McHardy, in the Blackhead run, a property which had been transferred from a wilderness into ono of the best farms in the province. On the death of the late Mr. Alexander McHarcly, his two sons, Messrs. P. A. and Jj. H. McHardy, carried on farming at Blackhead in partnership, when they pur. chased a property near Palmerston North, where they established the' Beaulieu stud farm, made famous for its Shorthorn cattle. Here the late Mr. L. H. McHardy made his homo for several years until tho property was disposed of, when he returned to Hawke's Bay, taking possession of a portion of the old Blackhead property, his brother taking the other portion. During tho war both Mr. L. H. McHardy, a.nd his brother, Mr. P. A. McHardy, made very handsome donations to patriotic funds, and other similar purposes, thus setting a splendid examplo for other colonists to follow. The late Mr. McHardy was ono of tho best breeders and judges of Lincoln sheep and Shorthorn cattle in the Dominion. He was ono of the most kindly of men, and •considerate of employers, a big-hearted man in every way, and ono whom it was an honor to know. The Dominion can ill j afford to lose such men, and in passing they leave behind them a.' place which is always hard to fill. Another old colonist, 'Mrs. Ann Mawliiuricy, relief, of the Into Hugh Ma.whiimey, died in Wellington recently. The deceased lady, who' was in her ninety-first year, was born in Dundee, Scotland, in January, 1837, arriving in Auckland in the ship Resolute in 1865. she accompanied her husband to tho Thames goldfields. and afterwards removed to tho Wellington district, whore her husband held contracts in railway works on the Wellington to Wairarapa line. She is survived by four sons and one daughter.
