ST. MARY’S CARNIVAL MISS THELMA OWEN THE QUEEN Miss Thelma Owen was last; evening crowned Queen of the carnival organised by the Catholic community of the district to provide funds for the liquidation of the debt on the new St, Mary’s school, the pageant, which Cook place in the Opera House, marking the conclusion of one of the most successful carnivals yet held in Gisborne. Tiiist evening’s ceremony was a most spectacular one, the curtain being rung up to reveal a richly-carpet-ed royal (tins, surmounted by the throne, around which the vice-regal group were assembled. As the princesses and their ladics-in-waiting made their appearance, and took up their appointed places upon the dias, they were greeted with the most, enthusiastic applause from the audience, and a storm of applause shook the house as Miss Thelma Owen, the Queen of the carnival, resplendent in her crimson and ermine robes, ascended the tlirone. The srjow-white robes of the princesses, the pink and blue costumes of the ladics-in-waiting, ami the appropriate dresses of the pages and flower-girls, presented a charming and spectacular scene, which evoked spontaneous applause from the audience. The proclamation was read by the chancellor, Mr. M. J. Kyne, who .then proceeded to crown the queen, amidst a renewed outburst of approbation. . Following the coronation, “knighthoods” were bestowed upon the following for services rendered during the campaign: Mr. M. J. Kyne,. “Knight, of the Three Bolls”; Mr. T. Quirk, “Knight of Whareongaonga”; Mr. O. Alley, “Knight of the ■ Barroll”; Mr. F. Liddle, “Knight of the Sheik”; Mr. J. J. Keane, “Knight of the Road.”

During the ceremony Father Murphy mads presentations of beautiful strings of pearls to the Queen and princesses, the Queen also being the recipient of other gifts, among which was a beautiful bouquet The presentation was followed by the National Anthem. The following comprised the viceregal company: Chancellor, Mr. M. J. Kyne; herald, Miss Joan Kyne.

Shone. Prior to the coronation ceremony a concert was staged. Talent was by no means absent and the public showed their appreciation of the many fino items with the warmest acclamation. A number worthy of notice was a scene from “A Midsummer Night's Dream," acted by Misses J. Kyne, S. Halbert, Stella Bradfield, and Joan Mollor. The young performers wero pupils of Miss Enid Hooper and certainly did their teacher the greatest credit. Songs were given by Misses K. Arnold, R. Sexton, G. Fanning, N. Wilson, E. Hollior, Eirenc Halbert, D. Sharpe, Y. Quinn, and Messrs F. Neill and J. Turbitt; and dances by Misses M. Kcany and I. Sharpies. Mr. W. Lighton played a violin solo, while he also contributed greatly to .the success of the evening by bis conductorship of the orchestra.
